Ahmedabad to Jaisalmer Road Trip via Udaipur & Jodhpur

This is the shortest driving day of the whole trip, which buys you a genuinely relaxed start. Leave Ahmedabad by 6:30–7:00 AM on Riverfront Road and Airport Road toward NH48. Google currently flags a closure note on Riverfront Road itself, so glance at live traffic before you pull out. NH48 then runs wide and fast through Himmatnagar to Shamlaji, where the 11th-century Shamlaji Temple makes an easy breakfast stop right on the highway before the road climbs gently into the Aravallis and crosses into Rajasthan. Because this leg is barely 4.5 hours door to door, you will likely be checked into Udaipur by early afternoon, enough spare time to fit in an old-city walk the same evening rather than just a sunset stop, which is why this itinerary handles Jagdish Temple and Hathi Pol Bazaar today instead of stacking them onto Day 2.

With the old city and Lake Pichola already covered on Day 1's lighter evening, spend today on Udaipur's two remaining clusters: the City Palace complex and the northern lakes. Start at City Palace right at opening (9:30 AM, budget 2–2.5 hours) to see the Mewar courtyards before the crowds build, then walk along Gangaur Ghat to Bagore ki Haveli, a restored 18th-century mansion turned heritage museum. After lunch, rest through the early-afternoon heat, then drive 10–15 minutes north to Saheliyon ki Bari gardens, which sit right next to Fateh Sagar Lake pair the two and close the day there for sunset.

Leave Udaipur by 7:30–8:00 AM. The confirmed route runs on NH58 straight through Nathdwara, home to the Shreenathji Temple, about 45–50 minutes out of the city and on to Rajsamand (Kelwa), before climbing gently through Deogarh and cutting onto SH-61 via Jojawar, Kamalighat and Marwar Junction, then NH162 through Pali, Sojat and Bar into Jodhpur. Unlike the Ahmedabad leg, this stretch is not about speed so much as rhythm, temple town, lake town, hill town, then the long flat run into the Blue City. The SH-61/NH162 combination is a toll road with a short restricted-usage segment on the final approach into Jodhpur, stick to the main carriageway if your navigation flags it. Reach Jodhpur by mid-afternoon, check in, rest, then head out on foot for Toorji Ka Jhalra and the Clock Tower lanes.

Start early at Mehrangarh Fort, allowing 2–3 hours before the midday heat builds. Jaswant Thada sits barely a kilometre below the fort, visit it right after while the morning air is still cool and Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park is part of the same hill, so round off the circuit there. After lunch and a midday rest, visit Umaid Bhawan Palace Museum in the afternoon, a short drive across town. Mandore Garden is a separate part of the city, about 9 km north; stacking it onto an already-full fort-and-palace day makes for a rushed finish, so it works better as an optional add-on than part of the core plan.

Leave Jodhpur by 7:00 AM while the air is still cool. The route runs NH125A toward Narwa Khichiyan, then MDR32 to Dechu, before joining NH125/NH11 through Phalodi and Pokhran into Jaisalmer. Past Dechu, the landscape empties out fast, wider gaps between fuel stations and towns mark the real start of the desert stretch. Pokhran, roughly two-thirds of the way in, is worth a short stop for its Rajput-era fort and a bite at the local sweet shop. Reach Jaisalmer by early-to-mid afternoon, check in, and rest through the worst of the heat. In the evening, once it's cooled off, walk to Gadisar Lake, then the old city market close by, finishing with a first, exterior-only look at the fort walls lit up after dark, save the full walk inside for tomorrow.

Your last full day works best split into three clear blocks: cool-hour cenotaphs, warm-hour fort, and golden-hour dunes. Set an alarm and get to Bada Bagh, 6 km north of the city, just as the sky lightens, the cenotaphs photograph best in that early light and you'll have the site largely to yourself. Come back into town for breakfast once the sun is properly up, then walk into Jaisalmer Fort mid-morning, when it's open but the day-tripper crowds haven't arrived yet; give the fort itself and its Jain temples a good two hours. From there it's a short walk outside the ramparts to Patwa Haveli and Nathmal ki Haveli, which sit close enough together to cover as one loop before the heat really sets in. Use the middle of the day to get off your feet entirely, then head out to Sam Sand Dunes in the late afternoon, the drive is only 35–45 minutes, but leave a buffer so you're not racing the sunset. This is the main dune field for the classic sunset-and-camel-ride experience; further south near Khuri the dunes are quieter and far less set up for visitors, so don't mix the two up if you are booking online. Camp overnight if you have arranged it, or head back into Jaisalmer once it's dark, taking the unlit road slowly.
