Surat to Jaisalmer Road Trip via Udaipur & Jodhpur

Leave Surat by 6:00 AM to clear Kamrej and join the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway (NE-4) while traffic is still light. Rather than continuing straight up NE-4 through the Vadodara–Ahmedabad belt, this route exits toward Chhabanpur near Godhra and picks up the Godhra–Shamlaji corridor, passing through Lunawada and Malpur before reaching Modasa. This is a genuinely quieter alternative, you will notice far fewer trucks and no Ahmedabad ring-road traffic though the road narrows to a two-lane state highway for this middle stretch, so keep a steady, unhurried pace rather than expecting expressway speeds throughout. At Shamlaji, the historic Shamlaji Temple, an 11th-century Vishnu shrine right on the highway, makes a natural stop for breakfast or a quick darshan before you rejoin NH48 for the final run into Udaipur. This is a driving day, so keep sightseeing to the two stops already on the way: the temple stop and a lakefront sunset on arrival. Save City Palace, Jagdish Temple and the old-city market for Day 2, when you will actually have time to enjoy them rather than rush them in tired.

With Day 1 spent entirely driving, keep Day 2 walkable and unhurried, this is where the real old-city sightseeing happens. Start at City Palace soon after it opens at 9:30 AM (budget 2–2.5 hours) to see the Mewar courtyards and lake views before the crowds build. Jagdish Temple is a five-minute walk from the palace gate, and from there it's an easy stroll through Hathi Pol Bazaar (Bada Bazar) for handicrafts and miniature paintings. A short walk further along Gangaur Ghat brings you to Bagore ki Haveli, a restored 18th-century mansion turned heritage museum, a relaxed late-morning stop. After lunch, rest through the early-afternoon heat, then drive north (10–15 minutes) to Saheliyon ki Bari gardens, which sit right next to Fateh Sagar Lake, pair the two together and close the day at Fateh Sagar for sunset.

Leave Udaipur by 7:30–8:00 AM. The confirmed route runs on NH58 through Nathdwara and on to Rajsamand (Kelwa), then continues to Deogarh before cutting onto SH-61 through Jojawar, Kamalighat and Marwar Junction, then NH162 through Pali, Sojat and Bar into Jodhpur. Shreenathji Temple in Nathdwara sits directly on this stretch, about 45–50 minutes out of Udaipur, making it a natural first stop rather than a detour. Past Rajsamand, the road climbs gently through Deogarh before dropping onto SH-61's toll stretch, where traffic thins out and the terrain flattens as the Aravallis fall behind. The final approach into Jodhpur includes a short restricted-usage road segment ,stick to the main carriageway if your vehicle or navigation flags it. Reach Jodhpur by mid-to-late afternoon, check in, rest, then head out on foot in the evening for Toorji Ka Jhalra and the Clock Tower lanes, which sit a short walk apart in the old city.

Start early at Mehrangarh Fort, one of Rajasthan's most impressive forts, allowing 2–3 hours to do it justice before the midday heat. Jaswant Thada, the marble royal cenotaph, sits barely a kilometre below the fort an easy add-on straight after, before you lose the cool morning air. Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park is part of the same hill, right below both, so round off the fort circuit there for a quieter, open-landscape contrast to the crowds above. After lunch and a midday rest, visit Umaid Bhawan Palace Museum in the afternoon, a short drive across town. Mandore Garden is a separate part of the city, about 9 km north, trying to add it on top of the fort complex and Umaid Bhawan makes for a rushed, over-packed day, so it's better treated as an optional add-on than part of the core plan.

Leave Jodhpur by 7:00 AM while the air is still cool. The route runs NH125A out toward Narwa Khichiyan, then MDR32 to Dechu, before joining NH125/NH11 through Phalodi and Pokhran into Jaisalmer. The landscape thins out fast past Dechu, this is where the drive genuinely starts to feel like desert, with wider gaps between fuel stations and towns. Pokhran, roughly two-thirds of the way in, is a worthwhile short stop for its Rajput-era fort and a bite at the local sweet shop. Reach Jaisalmer by early-to-mid afternoon, check in, and rest through the worst of the heat. In the evening, once it's cooled off, take a short walk to Gadisar Lake, then the Jaisalmer old city market close by, finishing with a first, gentle look at the fort's outer walls lit up after dark, save the full inside walk for tomorrow.

Start before sunrise for Bada Bagh, about 6 km north of the city, the royal cenotaphs are at their best in the soft early light, and it is the coolest part of the day besides. Head back into the city afterward for a proper breakfast, then reach Jaisalmer Fort by mid-morning once it's open and the day-trip crowds haven't built up yet. Spend a couple of hours walking the fort itself, then step just outside its walls into the haveli cluster - Patwa Haveli (Patwon ki Haveli) and Nathmal ki Haveli sit close together and are easily combined into one walking loop. Rest back at your hotel through the midday heat, then in the late afternoon drive out to Sam Sand Dunes with enough buffer to arrive before sunset without rushing. Sam Sand Dunes is the main tourist dune field for sunset, camel and jeep activities distinct from the quieter, less-developed dunes further out near Khuri, which some travelers confuse it with.
