Jodhpur to Jaisalmer

Begin the drive from Jodhpur by 6:30–7:00 AM so you can take advantage of empty highways and cooler temperatures. Once you leave the city, the road opens up quickly into long, straight desert stretches. The drive is long but calm. Roads are straight, traffic is light, and once you are past Pokhran, it feels like you are truly entering the desert. By the time you reach Jaisalmer in the early or mid-afternoon, you will be ready to slow down. This is not the time to rush through monuments. The best approach is to check in, rest a bit, and step out only for light exploration to get a first feel of the city like a short walk around fort area markets or say outer viewpoints of Jaisalmer Fort as you can save inside visit for next morning.

The next morning, explore Jaisalmer before heading into the desert. Start your day early in Jaisalmer so you can finish sightseeing before the heat builds up. Most of the city’s main attractions are close to each other, making it easy to cover them without long drives. Aim to wrap up sightseeing by late morning, so the rest of the day stays relaxed. Once you are done in the city it is time to head toward the desert. The drive to Sam Sand Dunes is short and straightforward about 40 km and usually takes around an hour. As you move away from Jaisalmer, buildings thin out, sand becomes more prominent, and the surroundings feel increasingly open. By reaching the desert camps in the early afternoon you have enough time to rest before the evening activities begin. Later you can enjoy dinner under the open sky.

After spending a night in the desert, the morning feels slow and peaceful. This day is flexible and depends on your onward travel plans.

• Take an early morning walk on the dunes.

• Watch the sunrise if you are up early.

• Have breakfast at the camp.

• Drive back to Jaisalmer by late morning.
