Surat to Jodhpur Road Trip via Udaipur

Start your Surat to Udaipur drive early, ideally around 6:00 AM, to clear city traffic before joining NH48 at Kamrej and merging onto the NE4 (Delhi–Mumbai Expressway). The big advantage of this route is that the expressway carries you past the Bharuch–Vadodara–Ahmedabad belt without dropping you into any of that city traffic, so the first few hours are fast and predictable. You exit near the Modasa–Godhra highway and rejoin NH48 through Modasa, with the 11th-century Shamlaji Vishnu Temple sitting right at the Gujarat–Rajasthan border as a natural chai-and-darshan break before the landscape turns greener and hillier on the Aravalli climb into Rajasthan. Aim to reach Udaipur by late afternoon, check in, and keep the evening light. Walk down to Lake Pichola, the palace-lined lake, and the one for the classic sunset boat ride , then settle in at Gangaur Ghat as the light softens, then cross to Ambrai Ghat for the postcard City Palace view at sunset before dinner at a rooftop overlooking the water.

With Day 1's long drive behind you, Day 2 is a full but comfortably paced Udaipur day. Begin at the City Palace soon after it opens at 9:30 AM (give it 2–2.5 hours) for the Mewar courtyards, museums and Lake Pichola views before the crowds build, then walk two minutes to Jagdish Temple at the palace gate for a quick visit. From there stroll along Gangaur Ghat to Bagore ki Haveli, then dip into Hathi Pol Bazaar (Bada Bazar) — the old city's main market for handicrafts, miniature paintings and souvenirs, an easy walk from the palace before breaking for a lakeside lunch and a rest through the afternoon heat. In the cooler late afternoon, drive out to Saheliyon ki Bari garden, then time your evening for sunset at Sajjangarh (Monsoon) Palace, Udaipur's finest panoramic viewpoint. Most of the day's stops sit close together in the old city, with only Saheliyon ki Bari and Sajjangarh needing a short drive, so it stays relaxed rather than rushed.

Leave Udaipur after breakfast, around 7:30–8:00 AM, and pick up NH58 north via Sukher. This leg is shorter and calmer than Day 1, barely 45 minutes out, the temple town of Nathdwara (home of the Shrinathji Temple) makes an easy darshan or breakfast stop, followed by the Rajsamand–Kamalighat stretch where the highway runs past lakes and open fields. After Kamalighat the route cuts west onto SH61 through Marwar Junction (a short tolled section) before the land turns dry and desert-like on the final run into Jodhpur via Jhalamand. You should reach Jodhpur by early-to-mid afternoon; check in, rest, then head out in the evening. Start at the restored Toorji Ka Jhalra stepwell, then wander across to Sardar Market and the Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower) sunset lanes, at their most atmospheric as the light drops and the bazaar fills up, an easy, walkable trio to end the day.

Dedicate Day 4 fully to Jodhpur. Start early with Mehrangarh Fort, allowing 2–3 hours for its ramparts, palaces and sweeping views over the blue city. A short walk away is Jaswant Thada, the white-marble royal cenotaph beside the fort (this is the marble memorial, not the fort itself), and directly below is Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park for a calm walk through restored desert terrain. After lunch and a midday rest, visit the Umaid Bhawan Palace museum in the afternoon, then keep the evening free to shop lightly around the Clock Tower and try Jodhpur's famous street food.
